Wonderful Kale Smoothies

I am not going to lie, I am in love with kale. I never knew that I would have such a personal relationship with kale, but it just happened. It seems to be my go to vegetable these days. I am so looking forward to growing some this year as I keep consuming tons of it, mostly in my smoothies and for kale chips. I usually tend to lean towards my favourite green smoothie mix of kale, lemon and green apples. However since we have two huge watermelons rolling around on the table and consuming a huge amount of space, I thought that I better switch it up.

I am going to nickname this as my "welcome to green smoothies" drink. I made two versions and the first is just perfect to share with someone who is new to the green smoothie movement.( where you combine fruit and green vegetables into one healthy smoothie). It is so mild tasting and would be great with a frilly little umbrella on it and you can pretend you are at the beach.

Here is the first batch I made today.

You will need
2 cups of cubed watermelon
1 frozen banana (can use more if you want it sweeter or less)
1/3 cup of water
1/3 cup raspberries
1 cup spinach

Put everything in a blender and serve. I love the fresh light green shade and taste. It is perfect for those that have never had a green smoothie.

My daughter and hubby loved it.

If you have been drinking green smoothies for a while you could do this version. It is still light and fluffy and would work in a nice summer setting or really anytime of year. I added this to the recipe ingredients listed above:

6 kale leaves
1 capsule of blue green algae or E3Live

I blended in the kale and then poured out the mixture. To that I added the algae and mixed it around. This turned it a shade darker. You could also half the amount of banana if you don't need your smoothies to be sweet. I have also been in love with blue green algae. If you don't have it you could use spirulina or chlorella.

Followed the smoothie with a quick salad. Messy, but yummy.

Enjoy!!

What vegetable are you in love with these days? Are you having a green smoothie everyday? I would love to hear if you have tried blue green algae and what you think of it?

  1. I LOVE green smoothies! Acutally, smoothie (singular). I've been addicted to one recipe forever and I'm afraid to switch it up. Your recipe though may just convince me to try something new. I have one almost everyday. I usually have it right after I go for a run. In mine I use a handful of spinach (or kale) depending on what I have or if the kids are having any (they don't like it with kale as it doesn't blend as well). I add in fresh pineapple, frozen mango, frozen banana and some water. No real recipe, I just throw it all in there. I will also add either a couple of tbsp of ground flax or chia and I've been experimenting with different protein powders lately too. It is such a yummy smoothie and very tropical tasting. I bet some coconut butter added to it would make it even more yummy! hmmm...must try that!

Hoping to see you thurs by the way.

I'll have to try the watermelon in a smoothie when it comes in season here.
I want to try to grow kale this year myself.

  6. Love all of you green smoothie lovers!!!

Lacia I am loving the idea of a tropical smoothie. Who doesn't love to feel like they are on vacation while drinking a smoothie:). I should see you Thursday.

Kelly I will have to check out your blog post today about kale.

Michelle I love that you will be growing kale too this summer. I had a ground hog last years who caused havoc, so I will have to make a fence this year.

  7. Lauren, thanks for the comments. I am glad you are loving kale too. Isn't it funny how all of us love kale, but I also know so many who have never tried it or dislike it.

Kelli it sure sounds like you are super charging with the good stuff. I just read a local paper about radiation here in Ontario in cows milk. So I think that is awesome to be adding all of that in.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I finally tried Kale chips the other day (I made them) and OMG were they ever yummy!! I made a small bunch worth and ate them all myself!! Pierce helped me a little bit, but still.

Oh no your blender broke! I hate when that happens. My juicer broke a while ago. I am lucky to have 2 blenders right now. I have the Vitamix which I purchased for making Wysdom's food. Of course I use it for everything and it is my main one. Then I have on Oster which is a secondary one that works well for smoothies.

    Thanks for all the comments.

I love hearing about your children grabbing kale for a snack. That is so great. I am going to try growing some but I am a little worried about all the little animals in my backyard eating it.:)

  16. lunch smoothie with with a bean salad or avocado sammy: In a blender
    1 1/2 cups of water
1 medium apple or bosch pear (cored)
    1 handful of raw spinach
    4 kale leaves
    1 tbsp diced fresh ginger
    2 soaked dates
1 tbsp of agave nectar or water from soaked dates
    2 ice cubes

Sometimes I quarter, core and freeze my apples and pears so I use 2 cups of water and no ice.

  17. Taylor, thanks for the recipe. I am not sure if I have used pears and kale together before. I will have to give this a try. I like the added ginger.
